The Haraam List
Update (October 27, 2014):
Dear readers, as of late October 2014, I've migrated to Wordpress and have slowly been moving some of my personal favorite posts there as well during the last couple of days. You can read this list of haraam things on the new blog by clicking here: The Haraam List.
Thanks!
You forgot a very common one that certain Muslims never miss an opportunity to preach to others about: listening to instrumental music/playing musical instruments! These certain type of Muslims also love quoting a Hadith which goes something like (this was actually taken from someone's Facebook wall!): "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful." Ok, so there will be such people. Does this mean people who consider all four things lawful? Because I know an awful lot of Muslims who wear silk and play musical instruments but wouldn't dream of doing the other two things! Another oft-quoted Hadith to support the stance against music (which I don't clearly remember the wording of) is something like listening to music is like having boiling oil poured into one's ear. Incidentally, such people can never come up with any verse from the Quran supporting the prohibition on music, which the exception of their interpretation of a verse which warns against engaging in 'frivolous pursuits' or something, which they of course interpret as music (how convenient!). I'd like to hear your thoughts on this, Orbala.
ReplyDeleteExactly! So many people quote "hadiths" which say that music is haram and whatnot, whenever I ask one of these people to give me a quote from the Quran, they are unable to do so. I also think that many poeple seem unaware of the difference between the Quran and Hadith, the Quran is always correct and 100% reliable. It cannot be edited, distorted, or changed in any way or form. The hadith, however, is a collection of things in which the Prophet is reported to have said, or done. Not all hadiths are true. Some of them are true, and very important (e.g. hadith on steps of prayer and wudu) some, on the other hand - such as it being forbidden to listen to music ) are purely ridiculous. It is really common sense to tell the difference between false and true hadiths.
DeleteI don't know one Muslim who has never broken any of these. I'm a catholic. I got curious because I go to an Arabic school. Its pretty messed up.
DeleteEvery Arab in my school actually listens to disgusting rap music like 2 chainz and lil Wayne about bitches smoking money and fuckin. Funny how they musnt know their religion
DeleteThat's a pretty good list but I completely disagree with some of these and I honestly think they're non sense. I think you should check in more than one website or ask a sheikh or something for some of the points.
DeleteMUSIC!!! How could I forget music, one of the best of all!! Thanks for pointing it out!
ReplyDeleteYes, I intended to include silk in there right after all of the "wearing what women wear," etc. stuff. Putting both right now. Thanks!
Oh - my thoughts on music and its supposed haramness: same as yours! I find it rather convenient that they interpret a term that means "frivolous pursuits" as music and some other things they want to believe are haraam. It's also very interesting what these people define as music. Who's to say what music is and what it's not? Who's to say that a beautiful, melodious recitation of the Qur'an (as is our Islamic tradition and everyone approves of it) is not music? So, the interesting/funny/saddening part here comes when they say that women can't recite the Qur'an publicly the way men can because men might be attracted to women's voices :p Won't they think what happens to women when they hear men's beautiful voices, their recitations of the Qur'an--like Mishary al-Afasy!?
ReplyDeleteYES MY SISTER YOU MAKE PERFECT SENCE...AMEEN ALHAMDULLILAH....
DeleteWearing nail polish :P
ReplyDeleteWhat is :P Sheithan
DeleteLOL, Anonymous. What an adorable response! :P
DeleteHeeey - should I add "making the :P icon" to the list of haraams, too? I'll think about it :)
LOL wearing nail polish is not haraam for women when they are not praying. BUT only when they are not praying it is haraan and forbidden.
DeleteJazakallah Khayr.
LOL! Becky, that is SO darn true! :D
ReplyDeletetalking with opposite sex on the internet how would you know if what sex they are?
DeleteI LOVE THIS COMMENT I LAUGHED OUT LOUD... BCUZ REALLY WE NEVER KNOW...
DeleteI don't agree with a lot of what you wrote. You show a very conservative view. Woman are required to cover themselves for their own good. You have exaggerated saying "curves, tight jeans etc are forbidden". That's not what Islam is about. Islam doesn't mean you should just sit in the house and not be able to communicate with others and be tightly wrapped in your own bubble. Yes, Islam does teach us to maintain modesty so MEN should respect us as we ought to be respected.According to one quote by Imam Ali (AS) we must be able to dress up in such a way that we don't abandon ourselves from the society and also maintain our modesty. (I remember reading this in Nahjul-Balagha, but don't remember the exact quote).
ReplyDeleteThere are many other points here that you wrote which I (as a muslim) don't agree with including :divorce, obeying husband? (seriously?!), Having to have your shalwar go down your ankles for men etc.
Mr.Anam...
DeleteQuran came to existence 1400 yrs ago it highlights few things only but with reference to modern era the way of discipline also varied so we want to extend what actual Al Quran insist during that period ok?
I also do not agree with a lot of what is written. Wearing pants is haram for women? Wearing a tie is haram? Well them that means I have committed a whole lot of sins then. This is honestly preposterous. This is such a strict and conservative view. Utterly ridiculous.
DeleteLet me just say a hadith
A newly muslim convert once questioned the Prophet (saw) What must I do to enter heaven everyday? The Prophet (saw) answered "You must pray 5 times each day" Then man bid him farewell and left. END OF. Of course a Muslim must do the five pillars (believe that there is only one God, worship only God no one else, even worshipping the Prophet (saw) is forbidden, prayer 5 times a day, fasting in Ramadan, Giving yearly charity after Ramadan (zakah), and Hajj) if one does all these five pillars then he/she is classed as a Muslim. I believe in hijab but definately not in things like "its haram to listen to music or wear red". Some people take the small things and make it big and the big things small. The majority of people I know think music is haram but then they gossip about others behind their backs. Is that what a good person does, nevermind Muslim.
Yay - another form of Islam :) Thank you so much for sharing your insight, Anam! That's exactly a part of the point: there are as many Islams (like conservative, extremely conservative, liberal, extremely liberal, progressive, extremist, correct, incorrect, etc.) as there are Muslims.
ReplyDeleteDera manana!
There is only one form of Islam and that is Quran & Sunnah. Other are forms are practicing Muslims. The way you practice the religion you will be tagged by the forms as mentioned. But my question to Anam is that when you wear tight cloths in public then what are your expectations from the public? What do you want to show to them and for what purpose?
DeleteP.S. These aren't my opinions, by the way! This is according to Islam--rather, the many different Islams (like forms, versions, understandings, interpretations) of Islam that the over a billion Muslims have come up with during the last 14+ centuries.
ReplyDeletewhat is written here is not what the Quraan and sunnah teach us. this is so wrong. the word haram is strong and it should not be said for everything which is makruh or you personally don't agree with.
DeleteI totally agree, haram is such a strong word and something that is makruh or something you personally do not agree with should not be classed as "haram". I don't think many individuals fully understand the definition and power of the word haram.
DeleteActually there aren't many "forms" of Islam. Islam is just one - that which is according to the practical life of Prophet (SAW). We, the people, are the ones who have divided ourselves and call that Islam (conservative, modern and whatnot). Same is the case with media: they call the terrorists "Islamists". Do you agree with that? Do you agree that Islam can teach a person to bomb the innocents? No right? Well they call themselves muslims? How do you define that? Conservative Islam?
ReplyDeletewell said. I believe Islam is just one. My entire family is Sunni, but I refuse to say Sunni or Shia etc I am a Muslim. That's it. The Prophet (saw) was a Muslim. Not Sunni. Not Shia. Not Wahabi. How can these people call themselves Muslims they are giving normal people a higher rank than they deserve (Wahabi).
DeletePfft whatever I would TOTALLY do the "I divorce you" x3 thing, and it will be legit
ReplyDeleteLOL, TFM! I hear you, Fatal Lady!
ReplyDeleteAnam, since we discussed this earlier, I am sure your question has been answered at least a little bit. But if not (and for those who weren't there to hear it), two things: 1) sarcasm, 2) there actually is no such thing as "one" Islam (I know, I know - you strongly believe there is. And for argument's sake, I'll agree with you that there is an IDEAL form, one that is apparently so impractical that no one has been able to practice it properly yet, except Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)... and that is the one that we all try to practice but constantly fail in doing so. In the process, however, we create other forms), so, yes, these are created by us humans, even if well-grounded in the Ideal Islam we're striving for.
What's haraam to one person isn't haraam to another -- hence the contradictions in the list (and many more to be added with time).
Actually, what you (qrratugai) have stated goes against the basic rules and teachings in Islam. All Muslims should know that there are three stages in Islam (they are all Islam, all the same form, just at different levels).
DeleteLevel 1: Islam (this is the simplest form of the religion, it is known as Islam, followers are called Muslims)
Level 2: Iman (higher than Islam, more devoted follower, followers known as Mo-omin this is considered a great accomplishment if acheived)
Level 3: Ihsan (final level, equal to the level of the Prophets - yes Prophets, not just Muhammad (saw) all the Prophets reached this level, it is the reason they were chosen by Allah (swt) as Prophets; followers are called Moohsin)
This is basic knowledge, I learnt this at age 5, and still remember it to this day. The religion that Prophet Muhammad (saw) taught is similar, just more precise, than that of the previous Prophets. All Prophets Isa or Jesus(ais) Noah (ais) Ibrahim (ais) Moses or Moosa (ais) all taught the correct religion, but Islam, being the most recent, was taught in more detail. The reason that there are some differences nowadays is because all previous holy books were able to be edited and changed by other people. The Quran is the ONLY holy book to have existed that has not been changed in the slightest. It is a miracle from Allah (swt). THERE IS ONLY ONE RELIGION TAUGHT BY THE PROPHET. To be a Moohsin, you must have acheived Islam and Iman. The religion altogether is known as Islam, and the first stage of the religion is also known as Islam. Because to be a Muslim you must have acheived Islam. To be a Moomin you must have acheived Islam and Iman, to be a Moohsin you must have acheived Islam, Iman and Ihsan. The Prophet taught that there is only one Islam, not other forms. Secondly, there are several heavns. Not one heaven. There is a heaven for Muslims, Moomins and Muhsins. The Prophets were Moohsins. It is possible fpr a normal person living in the 21st century to be a Moohsin. Do not say that it is not possible.
Also the definiton of haraam is: Haraam is the Arabic word meaning "forbidden", it is given to specify any act that is forbidden in the religion taught by the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) - Islam.
Tell me then, How is "What's haraam to one person, isn't haraam to another. The last time I checked the same rules in the Quran apply to everyone. You clearly do not understand the strength of the word haraam, it is a very strong word to use. And what is haraam for one Muslim, is haraam for all Muslims, and is also haraam to the entire population of Allah's creation. Some people, however, make up things which are haram. For example, it is "haraam" not to wear a niqab. This is a false statement. Some people believe it is haraam not to wear a niqab, there is no Quranic proof to support this. On the other hand, it is most certainly haraam not to pray. This applies to everyone.
Overall, there is only one form of Islam, but different levels to the religion, all the rules in the Quran apply to everyone, what is haraam to one Muslim is haraam to another. Regradless of that individual's perspective.
reshcha reshcha waya so d paki d zan na likaly:s?
ReplyDeletewhat approval? @ your comment will be visible after approval? Oh thats why there is haram list so there is no approval wait time for God to approve. What is a haram list of comments that will not be approved? Qrratigai
ReplyDeletei think a girl posting a haram list on the internet which boys can also see is haraaaam?
ReplyDeleteWhere, posting this list, will not be haraam!
DeleteFor whom it will halal to post Mr(s) Naa Maloom?
Now that is just silly, of course it is not haram!
DeleteLMAO @ the last one! A girl posting publicly with her posts visible to men must certainly also be haraam ;) Interaction between the two genders is, after all, undoubtely haraaaaaam. Tobah.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments :) And all comments people make are subject to approval by me because of potential spam as well as comments that indicate disrespect towards others.
You should not joke, some people may misunderstand and think it actually IS haraam. It clearly isn't.
DeleteIt is perfectly fine to post on this blog.
ao ay talking to fiance(e) is also haram even on whatsapp :O
ReplyDeletebtw lusting for opposite sex isn't haram. Your source?
ReplyDeleteseeking approval of a girl for boy, regarding the posting of comment is also haram.
ReplyDeleteplaying chess is also haram
ReplyDeletepasa mary zama da comments approve ka.
ReplyDeleteLOL, Anonymous! Sa wakam, pa khob dera mayana yam :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I've heard and read many places that chess is haraam! That's a good one to add to the list - thanks!
LMAO @ talking with fiance(e) on Whatsapp :p
Lusting after the opposite sex is most, most definitely haraam. Did I write that it's not? :o Fatal mistake, man.
lol @ seeking approval for posting comment ... perhaps for a male to seek the approval of a female in posting a comment is haraam, yes, of course (it makes sense: men are in charge of women always, right? women can never have any position of authority and stuff), but I don't think it'd be haraam the other way around... can't be.
Are you serious? Who are you? Of course women can have authority. You are being way too extremist. Your views are extremely conservatist.
Deletehe he he lolz..................lack of information .....cigaratte is not haram ......it is just mukr which is just disliked dude .......
ReplyDeleteexactly. not haram makrur. I think people fail to understand the difference between the two.
DeleteFOR WOMAN CIGARETTES ARE HAARAM!!!!ABSOLUTELY..
DeleteBy reading most of your blog entries, I think it's safe to say that you're very keen on tribalism.
ReplyDeleteI'm so honored to hear you've read most of my blog entries! Thank you for your readership!
DeleteHm... not sure I get what you mean by "keen on tribalism." As in, I support it or am opposed to it?
Thanks for this list! I think I have a lot of the same views as you :)
ReplyDeleteOut of all The things you have mentions, not all are haram.. You can further classify your list into two parts viz: haram and Makru..
ReplyDeleteExactly.
DeleteMany of the items on your list are debatable and you havent shown any real proof that these things are infact haram u didnt refer to the Quran or our prophet (phuh) chess isnt haram and was enjoyed by the muslims who played it before the english, also a husband is not allowed to ban his wife from visiting her family/parents , the quran doesnt say that covering your face is haram and, also your father can say he doesnt want you to marry someone but he cant force you to, you have a say in whom you are marrying and tbh ur making it seem like woman have so many things they cant do and that islam is super sexist and unfair but if you really think about it theres a reason for eveything woman cover up so that they are unattractive Because if you think about it a guy would prefer to look at a girl in tight clothing and this causes urges leading to sexual intercourse like evrything u got on you list (that isnt incorrect) theres a reason for it. Islam is a beautiful religion not sexist how extremist portray it. Also you can wear nail polish but u just gotta take it off before you pray because it stops water from cleaning under ur nails when you do wudu....i search this stuff up all the time and ask imaams bout it and your list is in accurate Yup :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, Anonymous!
DeleteYou should read the comments above :)
Best,
Nonetheless, here's "evidence" for the things you say are not haraam ;) (By the way, you can just type these thing in Google and get your answer--always with evidence from hadiths and/or early Muslim scholars' fatwas on them. Didn't take me long to find the following.)
DeleteFace-covering is obligatory in Islam: http://www.qissa-khwani.com/2012/08/gender-and-sexuality-performances-in.html
Playing chess is haraam in Islam: http://islamqa.info/en/ref/14095
A wife cannot visit her parents, even if they're on their death-bed, if her husband does not want her to: http://www.al-islam.org/islamicfamily-life/21.htm (there's a hadith on this as well; shouldn't take long to find it. It's a Sahih one, too, unfortunately)
Anything else? :)
I don't think "Islam" is super-sexist. It's those who made these laws that are super-sexist. Unfortunately, almost all of these things come from hadith (none from the Qur'an), so we really can't blame our law-makers for being sexist...
Many, many thanks for your comment! I hope to see you around more often :)
I would advise you to provide actual evidence next time. What you have given is merely a fellow Muslim's personal perspective on certian topics. You have not given any Quranic proof whatsoever that can fully justify your point. Face covering is not mandatory in Islam, nor is it mustahib (recommended). It is only mustahib when a female individual has applied any form of facial enhancement (make-up). The hadiths that may be provided are not reliable whatsoever. Secondly, there is no ayah or phrase in the Quran saying "Chess is forbidden". The hadith only states that any game that may stir up hatred, deter a Muslim from prayer, or involved a price/reward (gambling) is forbidden. The website only says that "scholars" say it is haram. I would like to ask these scholars to provide me with evidence. I have had personal experience that not everything the scholar says is true. My uncle works for the second largest global organisation after the United Nations. And the largest Islamic organisations in the world. He is the president of several committees, speaks fluently in over 3 languages, can understand (not fluent) in over six. He is in a higher position than some of those named in the website you have provided. And yet I do not have the same views Islamically. Why? Because when I asked him for proof and justification of his point, he gave me one of the smallest most unreliable hadiths ever, and publicised it. I, myself went on that path once, but after fully evaluating and understanding the essence of Islam I changed my view immediatley. There are over 5000 false hadiths, I only believe some. The hadith regarding music, is utterly ridiculous as well as many other. The word of the Quran is the only fully reliable source, as Allah (swt) has stated. I do not agree with wearing hijab before reaching puberty (when there is a large gap e.g. a 7 year old wearing hijab when her age of puberty is 15. )I do not agree in niqab unless there is any trace of makeup. Islam is a beatifull religion, but some people seem to want to make it as hard as possible. That is not what Islam is about, I think that once people understand the essence of the religion and understand how simple, yet beautiful is, then, and only then, can they preach and follow from the heart.
DeleteWait What? The list is NOT accurate. I was with you until you said the list was accurate.
DeleteBy the way our only law-maker is Allah (swt)..... Allah(swt) didn't write all of the hadith... not all hadiths are true by the way.
DeleteDear Muslim friends, brothers and sisters Aslamu alaikum varah...
ReplyDeleteAbove mentioned list is only for we people Muslim not for kafir's. so dont consider their comments, its the work of Iblees
May peace and blessing of Allah's will serve you..
Thank you for your insight and for accepting us as Muslims. Whew! What would we Muslims do without your approval ...
Delete1)We are all muslims so being a Sunni, Shia, Ahmedi or a Wahhabi doesn't matter, what only matters is believing in the oneness of Allah (swa)& Prophet Muhammad (saw) also, believing in the Quran.
ReplyDelete2)Doritos, Skittles, Starbursts, Vitamins/multivitamins & Playing chess are NOT haraam.(they are food)
3)Listening your parents when your husband won't let you--even if they are on their deathbeds (IS NOT HARAAM!!!) because, your parents have more right then your husband therefore you HAVE to be there for your parent WHATEVER you husband says. Specially your mother.
4)Making your own decisions (when men obviously know better than you what’s good for you) - I DISAGREE - because woman are not nothing. both genders have equal rights so womans can make their own decisions.
5)Wearing a hijab that men find beautiful (WHAT HIJAB IS NOT BEAUTIFUL?) ALL hijabs are beautiful mashallah.
6)Not covering your face (the niqab is not compulsory it is a SUNNAH so it is NOT haraam)
7)Wearing dresses, Wearing skirts are NOT haraam. they cover the body which is being modest.
Jazakallah Khayr.
&Find evidence to your strong point, thankyou :)
Thanks for your insight, Sumaya jaan! :)
DeleteI agree, except with the niqab being sunnah, it is not even sunnah. it is only mustahib when the female is wearing make up.
DeletePLAYING CHESS IS ILLEGAL?!!! NOT COOL!!
ReplyDeletethis list is not from the Quraan and Sunnah. this list is harram
DeleteHaraam is what is forbidden. There's another word for unacceptable/disliked, but I forgot what.
ReplyDeleteMakrooh.
DeleteThe word is MAKROOH
DeleteYou make everything sound worse than what it is. There's a good reason for the things that are haram even though I don't believe ur list is accurate. Women are the most important people in any family. Muhammad (pbuh) was asked 3 times who was the most important in the home and all 3 times he answered "your mother". You shouldn't wear tight revealing clothes for your own good. If the world of women kept to this law, the list is endless of the issues we have today that would disappear. And a woman can divorce her husband if he treats her badly. She shouldn't leave because he's sick or he got fat or he's ugly now etc etc. you make a promise to Allah to stand by this man for life as long as he treats u fair and just! Same with the men. And a man can only have multiple wives with the permission of his first wife! U have to remember when this was wrote. Because of wars, women were left widowed and other men took them in and married them to take care of them! Women were much more dependent on their husbands in that time. Lastly, keep in mind despite all the laws of Islam, Allah judges everyone differently. Not one of us sees the same laughs the same feels the same, we are all different and he made us that way. It matters what's in your heart. Nobody is perfect, what matters is that you make a conscious effort to live by the laws as much as u can. And the music thing, who really wants to listen to the garbage they play these days anyways?? ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your contribution to the discussion, Bbadawi! Greatly appreciated.
DeleteYou should read the comments above; everything you're saying has been said by some of the above commenters (who also didn't read the comments above :D)
... I'm certain you don't want me to reply to your points, most of which are based on people's preferences (such as the last point about music, lol), but I'll be happy to if you want to get into a discussion on the things you believe are haraam and are explaining the justifications behind their haramness. I study Gender and Sexuality issues in Islam, so your points regarding gender are of much interest to me!
I totally agree with your insight. I would also like to point out listening to music is not haram, nor is it makrooh. It is an unreliable hadith.
DeleteDear Haters,
ReplyDeleteI've got some advice you need to hear. Next time you read a blog post, get all fired up over it, and want to speak your mind, check yourself before you write a comment. Go read over the post again. Ask yourself, has my criticism of the post already been directly addressed in the post itself? Do I understand what the author is saying, or am I just running my mouth because the post has upset me? Are my comments relevant to the subject? Am I offering something original to the discussion, or am I just regurgitating, verbatim, something we've all heard repeated at mosques over and over again? If the answer to any of the above is no, you might reconsider posting a comment. This isn't facebook, where you get points just for saying whatever pops into your mind.
The author clarifies in her P.S. that this is not meant to be an authoritative, scholarly list of the do's and don't's of Islam--rather, it's a list of things that people who follow some form of Islam have claimed are impermissible. And yet almost the entire discussion about this post has revolved around A) Specific points of the list being either true or false, or B) The author subscribing to the "wrong" interpretation of Islam. You're not getting the point. Read it again. If you need more context to understand where the author is coming from, read some of her other posts.
Finally, I want to address the most hateful comment so far--the suggestion that you don't miss out on much by listening to music, anyway, because everything that's being put out today is "garbage." Come on, man, are you serious? Do you think that the soulless drivel being played on the radio is your only source for music? We've got internet now, you can listen to everything from Dirty South rap to Mongolian throat-singing at the touch of a button. Search YouTube, get a free Spotify subscription, do something, but please don't sweepingly denounce one of the most beautiful forms of human expression as it exists today. That's not hate, that's uber-hate.
Andy!
DeleteThank you so much for your comment!
I have been trying to figure out what exactly it is about the post that's so offensive to people or that people aren't getting the point for! And yet, people come and attempt to justify why, for example, "music" haraam - or why women cannot lead men in prayer or why women can't wear certain clothes, and so on. They totally missed the point!
What's interesting is that the point has been illustrated again and again even in the comments (where people are disagreeing with each other over whether something is haraam or halaal or neither). Others have asked me in person whether I "really believe all of these are haraam" and if so, why would I be a muslim then. What am I expected to say to such comments?
Thank you. This is truly the most beautiful, most important comment on the whole of Internet! May you be rewarded infinitely for your time and knowledge!
hi dear all for men showing upper body parts is haram or not plz clear me
ReplyDeleteMen cannot show bellow the belly button. Women cannot show these parts to anyone other than her husband. This is the most private part of the body.
Deletemens showing upper body part is haraaam or not plz clear me
ReplyDeleteIt's also haram for a man not to provide for his children and wife. How about adding that? And why dont you post a blog on how women have 20 years more on this planet on average compared to men? oh right. we have to deal with all the stresses of life while feminists like you hunt for reasons to hate us.
ReplyDeleteand while we're at it why dont you study Islam the way it's supposed to be studied and stop calling certain hadith that dont entertain your thought process as "problematic"? ( you wrote this somewhere else in your posts). Just man up and out yourself already. You have left Islam for a while Roshina
Awww, now, now, Annonie, why so much anger? Looks like I got me my first hater. #VERYsad #buseyShundey
DeleteYou should read the comment posted by "Andy" above. Maybe you'll get the message of the post better.
But is there anything in the post that you found inaccurate? Tell me which parts bothered you so much.
"Man up"? Who, me? But I'm a woman :O Why would I want to man up when I absolutely love myself as a woman? Thanks for your suggestion, though - but it just tells me you're one of those readers of my blog who just doesn't get what I say :) No hard feelings, though!
Oh heeeeyy! Just noticed you addressed me as "Roshina"! Awww! That brings back such interesting memories from PF. How's it going there, by the way? I hear the forum is now completely devoid of any intellectual activity, but I hope that's not true. Haven't had a chance to lurk around there in a while but hope everyone's doing well! Tell them I said halao, kha? :D
DeleteP.S. I imagine it's very convenient to dismiss someone as a Muslim just because they don't agree with your way of practicing and studying religion, no? Folks like you help increase my confidence in my field and remind me why I am actually pursuing exactly where I am needed most. I'm really grateful for that! Thanks so much!I also get to paste comments like yours into anthropological research on how Islam is "supposed" to be practiced and studied and according to whom. Here, you might this of interest.
Keep cool, though - it's not expected to anger you, so if it does, just stay calm. Keep some water with you.
I hope to hear back from you! :)
You like asking the same question over and over until someone says what you want to hear. I already mentioned a few points that I think you should respond to. I am not taking away the progress or the importance of women in our society but if you look around the "free" women havent done anything. Most afghan or muslim women with the all the freedom in the wrold just turn to a world of partying and general whoring. They have added nothing to civilization but merely lost the only thing that defined them - culture and faith. This is true for men as well. Instead of using this freedom to pursue careers that will bring about change, they make it harder for conservatives to let their daughters go free about. Im not on PF because half of those idiots are devoid of knowledge and the intellect that is required to understand the problems in our society. I just read through some of your posts and figured out who you were.
DeleteBtw, nearly all Phds in Islamic studies are usless. This has been proven by western experts as well because the "mantiq" or the thought process that needs to be developed to understand Islam using aqeeda and the teachings of our Prophet needs to be taken into account. We are grounded by a set number of principles that are not addressed in western Phd programs. For example on numerous occasions you dismiss ahadith ( a grave sin) simply because it does not fall within the confines of your thought process. How can anyone claim to be muslim when they disagree with some of the fundamentals of Islam? Also why dont you write about the divorce rates that hit muslim couples in the western "equal" world? Are you saying that family values should be annexed in favor of individualism? How would you respond to critics that say some tipping factor is required to maintain balance in the equilibrium of the husband/wife relationship? do you have an answer to that?
DeleteIn my opinion, I would rather learn Islam accurately, correctly, at my own pace. Not get a phd my aunties and uncles and some cousins have phds in Islam but I feel they are missing the very core of Islam
DeleteHeeey - folks on Twitter don't think you're my first hater, Anonnie :( Woopsie! I guess I take that comment back, lolzuna!
ReplyDeleteIslam is after all a religion based on revelation,in contrast parliamentary democracy as practised in the West, with all its manifest faults, is still the best and most just form of government yet devised by man, majority thinks that democracy is the only solution as i percieved from the above comments , for instance orbala if a girl in a traditional society is asked to wear skirt she would refused by saying toba Astaghfirullah , and in opposite if you ask a Chick the supporter or parliamentary democracy to cover your legs and hair , she would refuse by saying Tobah astaghfirullah , show me the verses and hadith , you want me to act like """Mora"", im not an uneducated girl who would accept this patriarchy , we all are son of english education , so the list is choose d with what preferences we have to gave one haram for another, we have seen in past and will experience in future The liberal and constitutional movements in the Islamic countries, with few exceptions, ended in failure, disappointment, and frustra- tion. GOD forgive us for the all sins we commit daily
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andy, he said exactly what I was thinking. Am a recent convert to Islam, alhumdililaah and those lists are the very reason I advise people interested in Islam to avoid the Internet as much as possible. Instead of clarity, I personally found it confusing. Far better to read a translation of the Quran, read about our Prophet saws, meet other Muslims in community settings and find someone you can trust to ask questions, who can and will refer you to sources if they don't know. Remember, Allah swt gave us the ability to reason, reflect and He is the only holder of Truth. May He forgive me for my mistakes and assalaam aliakum to you all. D Lily
ReplyDeleteWow, this is perfect. Convert and knows more that the people who have had Islam in their family for centuries.
Deletethe above discussion is between acting as an Islamist and liberal , Islam is after all a religion based on revelation,in contrast parliamentary democracy as practised in the West, with all its manifest faults, people think it is still the best and most just form of government yet devised by man, majority thinks that democracy is the only solution as i percieved from the above comments , for instance orbala if a girl in a traditional society is asked to wear skirt she would refused by saying toba Astaghfirullah , and in opposite if you ask a Chick :P the supporter or parliamentary democracy and liberal to cover your legs and hair , she would refuse by saying Tobah astaghfirullah , show me the verses and hadith , you want me to act like """Mora"", im not an uneducated girl who would accept this patriarchy , we all are son of english education , so the list is choose d with what preferences we have to gave one haram for another, we have seen in past and will experience in future The liberal and constitutional movements in the Islamic countries, with few exceptions, ended in failure, disappointment, and frustra- tion. ReplyDeleteBEING A VEGETARIAN IS HARAM? WHERE IN THE QURAN OR SUNNAH DOES IT SAY THAT YOU MUST CONSUME MEAT OR ITS A FARD OR EVEN COMULSORY AND THIS IS ONE TOPIC I LOOKED INTO AND IM SURE MORE OF THEM ARE ON THERE BY THE LOOKS OF IT.
ReplyDeleteWHERE ARE U GETTING THIS INFORMATION BROTHER????
most of the information in this list is wrong not only being a vegeterian.
DeleteI personally disagree with being a vegetarian. Allah (swt) provided us with food and meat, we must eat it it is offensive to refuse the Naymah.
Deleteyou are lying with most of these stuff
ReplyDeleteReading this list of haraam and part of the comments makes me very angry and full of shame that there are Muslims think this way. before saying that this is haraam and that is haraam, a Muslim must be sure because the word itself might lead to HARAM.
ReplyDeleteI am a very very proud Muslim and I don't agree with labeling everything that is not acceptable in one society or another with the word HARAM. what is HARAM are the things that are clearly forbidden in Islam in a clear text (Quraan and Hadeeth) such as riba, sariqa, zina and so on.
A proud Muslim woman.
Half of these things are so wrong. Please don't misguide people about the religion. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of Muslim you are ???
ReplyDeleteYou misleading other Muslims. You wrote what you think without any reference so it does mean you are lying. Most of the points are worthless & there is no fact so Please whoever you are first, be a Muslim then guide others.
you can't make Allah happy by writing this kind of Haram list.
Allah loves us & makes things easy for us thats why we are chosen for this religion please don't ruin our "Deen".There is solution for every problem in Islam so next time before writing think 100 times.
Thanks
Another proud Muslim girl.
i think talking about religion is haraam! talk god! no prophets and saints sud be praised but god! or u will act bias! i am a born hindu! so if u come to discuss i wud never want to loose!
ReplyDeleteMy mind is fucked after reading this
ReplyDeleteExcuse me, butt most of the things you have written here is not true! Wearing a tie? Seriously? Please do some research before you post lies like these -.-
ReplyDeleteThanks for your insight. We should all remember that even though we make all these mistakes, we will always be forgiven as long as we truthfully seek for it from Allah, the most forgiving, most merciful.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just have one question for you. Is eating with a spoon or fork really haraam? I am confused, because beforehand I thought it was haraam to eat with any gold or silverware (knife, fork, spoon, etc.), but you could eat with it as long as it wasn't made of those materials. Is it really true that it's haraam to eat with them, period?
Please, keep in mind that I'm not saying you are wrong. I just want to be sure so that I don't go on sinning. Thank you. Jazakallah khair, sister.
Dear All,
ReplyDeleteI would just like to say that the blogger has stated that these are not her views. Just what is stereotypically labelled as haraam, and some that are in fact haraam.
There are some posts from the author I disagree with however, such as there being "many forms of Islam" because there is only one true Islam. But I do not want to get into dispute, I would rather have a civil conversation if they are willing.
Wearing tie is haram? What.... Doctor Zane naik does ... Why not my brother
ReplyDeleteBeing Wahhabi (according to the non-Ahmadi)
ReplyDelete[... you get the point]
Sorry for sounding dumb, but I actually don't get the point.. will be great if you explain qrratu.
Thanks in advance :)
P.S. Nice blog
Thanks for seeking clarification, Anonymous!
DeleteI meant:
Being Sunni (according to the non-Sunnis)
Being Shi' (according to the non-Shi's)
Being Ismaili (according to the non-Ismailis)
Being Ahmadi (according to the non-Ahmadis)
Being Wahhabi (according to the non-Wahhabis)
not according to non-Ahmadi (in the last bit) :)
Basically, if you're X, then anything BUT X is allowed; being -X is then haraam.
P.S. Thaaaaaank you!
LOL .. funny list ..
ReplyDeletedid you consider changing the name of the topic.. its a lil misleading :)..
