Romantic Pashto Lines

This used to be a "page" on my blog (a tab at the top of the front page of this blog), but since I had too many tabs there, I decided to make some of them "posts." So here!
I love romantic Pashto songs and poetry. Like many other easterners, Pashto poets and lyricists express love in their writing in a very subtle and deep way. And, yet, even though this romance is so subtle, it's so suggestive! To express it that way takes talent. Now, the way poets and thinkers write and think reveals much about their culture and their society. For instance, one learns a great deal about how romantic relations, or relations between males and females who love and desire each other, are conducted; one also gets a strong sense of the beauty ideals as understood by the particular society. Note in the verses below, for example, the special significance given to (the female's) eyes and hair; note also how much rain is yearned for and appreciated.

Below, I post some romantic lines from Pashto poetry/songs that are either my personal favorites or that my Twitter buddies find beautiful. Feel free to add more, as this is not intended to be comprehensive. They are in no particular order - just the order in which they came to our mind.

P.S. I will translate them with time. If someone wants to help, you're wellllcome! Thankz.

(Song)

Don't confess your love to me in a foreign language; write love letters to me in Pashto only.
Yell at me, curse at me, express your anger at me -- but only in the melodious tongue that is Pashto!

Write to me, as bitterly as your heart desires, but only in the melodious tongue that is Pashto!
Don't give me glad tidings that I'm entering heaven in a foreign language!

Sre mangwale raghle nan mangwalo ta me zrra usho, sta da stargo send ta wardangalo ta me zrra usho!
Raghlama janana sta ledalo ta me zrra usho, satar nan la taa na matawalo ta me zrra usho! (Song)

I swear to God I'm never falling in love again! My beloved has a strange way of showing his love, I swear I'm never falling in love again!

Raazi pa nema shpa raana khyaluna takhtawee, sta stargi me la stargo na khoobuna takhtawee.

Ajiba khalak di da stargo na khobona yosi, khkuli zamong kali ta rashi zamong zrrona yosi.
My beloved - how strange she is! She makes me restless, coming to my village, stealing my heart.

(Song)

These fair and handsome ones, they really don't care
They never appreciate your love.
I've no choice but to love the darker ones
I'm in love with a tan one

Pa speeno lecho tasha garzi, Laila la maa na shna bangrri ghwaari!
And she walks bare-handed - I must get my beloved some bangles!

Pa maa nore rojey ma nisai shekhano; maa bega janan ledaley nan akhtar dey.
Don't make me fast today,, dear Imams; I saw my beloved last night - my Eid is today.

  1. There is no doubt that romantic poetry is always delightful to read as it rekindles sweet memories. I still remember listening to "Janana rasha pa gulshan nawai bahar" in my teens -- especially as Pashto is not my mother tounge.

Quite recently, I came across the translation of two Pashto poems on the website of the Poetry Translation Centre. I really liked the format -- all poems on their website have three versions: original text, literal translation, and poetic translation.

I must alert you that the two Pashto poems selected by the Centre are NOT romantic!

[Offtopic] Postscript: I am the Anon who wrote about RSS feeds on 3 Jan 2013. I am still not getting any RSS feeds in either Google Reader or in the offline reader that I use. Please do something about it.
